History of Le Grand Bornand

The delightfully authentic French ski resort of Le Grand Bornand takes its name from the river that wends its way gently through the heart of the village, and it is pleasantly situated within the pretty Aravis ski area between Mont Blanc, Annecy and Switzerland. Rich in architectual and religious heritage, Le Grand Bornand has a thriving agricultural community who maintain their farming customs and traditions. With over 90km of picturesque skiing terrain and its good snow record, Le Grand Bornand is a great family friendly resort that will guarantee an effortless and enjoyable ski holiday for all ages and abilities.


Accommodation in Le Grand Bornand

There is an exceptional choice of ski apartments within Le Grand Bornand, as well as catered and self catered chalet accommodation ideal for families and ski groups. Favourable village locations mean that many of the accommodation offers direct access to the slopes and, armed with an Avaris ski pass, you can explore the additional slopes of Manigod and St Jean de Sixt. The skiing terrain of Le Grand Bornand itself is divided into four main areas all of which are linked. Beginners should head for the gentle, south facing slopes of La Joyere, whilst intermediates will enjoy the long, undulating red and blue runs in the Le Mardy region. For those who are more advanced skiers, Le Lachat is the place to go with it's two challenging red runs and an awesome black that is only for the experts who dare! All four ski areas are accessible from the village centre making it incredibly easy to get around.

You may wish to discover the area by cross country skiing, or if you prefer going on foot, why not try snow shoe hiking which is a really great way to open up the mountains. Snowboarders are well catered for as there is a snow park at Le Grand Bornand and families keen on snowboarding will particularly enjoy the range of activities that are available for both the young and the not so young, the skilled or those who are embarking on their snowboarding adventure. During the summer season, Le Grand Bornand is a mecca for both mountain bikers and those who prefer to stick to the roads. The village boasts a long history with the Tour de France and has been both the start point and the finish point for the tour over the past 10 years. Mountain bikers will equally enjoy Le Grand Bornand and there are many challenges to face as you descend some difficult trails.
