About Val Thorens
History of Val Thorens
The French alpine village of Val Thorens is the highest ski village in Europe sitting at 2300m in the Tarantaise Valley of the Savoie region. Part of the second largest linked ski area in the world and the prestigious Three Vallees, Val Thorens has a wonderfully diverse range of slopes covering more than 600km to suit every level of skier and boarder. Originally a small mountain village, Val Thorens began it's transformation back in the 1960's and is now one of the most popular purpose built ski areas, well liked by both families and ski groups. The resort's altitude ensures excellent and reliable snow cover throughout the winter season, in to early May, and there is even summer glacier skiing! Val Thorens's has a long association with winter sports and hosts a wealth of sporting events such as the Trophee Andros, ski and snowboarders week and the 3 Vallees X-Wing rally. The pistes are well groomed and maintained although there is also plenty of powder to explore.

Winter sports activities are not limited to skiing and snowboarding. Thrill seekers can explore the mountain side on snow mobiles or from the air by either paragliding, or why not take the ultra light aircraft from Moutiere Plateau at 2500m. Alternatively, there is toboganning, mountain biking (yes on the snow!) or you may prefer to discover Val Thorens on foot by taking one of the appealing guided snow show walks on offer. The Jump 'air snowpark is the ideal location to perfect high risk jumping skills in safety, and it is great for all freestylers. There are two luge's to chose from, Caron place which is suitable for toddlers and the more nervous rider, and The Toboggan which is a far more thrilling descent. Night skiing is also widespread throughout Val Thorens and there is no better feeling than to descend the mountainside by torchlight.
