About Abondance
History of Abondance
Famous for the Abondance cheese, this mountain village owes its existence to a group of monks who crossed the border from Switzerland and chose the valley alongside Mont du Grange and du Pic de la Corne for their home. The spectacular Abbey forms part of the Monks legacy and this remains a very popular historical attraction within the Abondance ski resort today. This small and delightful French village is just a stones throw from Lake Geneva, and is slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the busier resorts. With it's breathtaking views and peaceful situation, Abondance is a versatile ski destination popular with both family ski holidays and those simply in search of tranquility amongst the dramatic mountain landscapes.
Accommodation in Abondance
Its close proximity to the Geneva Airport makes Abondance the perfect choice for ski weekends and short ski and snowboarding holidays. Whether you are searching for luxury chalets, fully catered or self catered ski chalet accommodation, Abondance will not disappoint. Welcoming traditional and charming chalets with sunny positions and peaceful locations are a joy to return to after a day on the slopes where warm log fires await. Situated in the popular Portes du Soleil area, buses provide regular access to the neighbouring resorts of La Chapelle d'Abondance, Chatel, Linga and Pre la Joux, and the Essert ski fields have nine lifts with easy access to 13 ski slopes set at the bottom of the Portes du Soleil valley. The pistes of Abondance deliver a peaceful but challenging skiing opportunity for beginners and intermediates where the quiet slopes unfold amongst the mountains.
Activities in Abondance
The Abondance resort is a perpetual playground for all ages. Children adore the Ludoffaz snowplay area where careful practice of ski turns or exhilirating sledging provides endless entertainment within a reassuringly safe environment. The network of designated snow shoe paths provide the ideal opportunity to explore all that the Abondance landscape has to offer, with guided trips available to enhance your experience. And no visit would be complete without taking a look at the architectual beauty of the Abbey, and the heritage centre - la Maison du Val. Summer months are equally exciting with hiking, mountain biking, climbing, fishing and a variety of watersport activities including kayaking and white water rafting, all within this dream holiday setting. And when the evening arrives, why not experience some wonderful cuisine including the tradional Abondance dish, Berthoud, which is a local speciality made from the Abondance cheese.
