About Les Houches

History of Les Houches

The ski resort of Les Houches is situated on the old road to Chamonix at the foot of the majestic Mont Blanc mountain. The name Les Houches is derived from the celtic word "Olca" meaning arable lands and traditional farmsteads still exist to this day. It was the farming community that successfully petitioned for Les Houches to become officially separated from Chamonix back in the early 18th century and the village became self governed in 1787. Les Houches has a long tradition of winter sports descending from the initial winter tourists who arrived in 1936 following the construction of the Bellevue Cable Car. Today, the local Khandaha Verte des Houches downhill ski run proudly plays host to the Chamonix leg of the World Cup and Les Houches has become the winter training base for the British Ski Academy. With the largest single ski area in the valley, there is 55km of tree lined slopes on the North West face of Mont Blanc, offering some truly spectacular skiing.

Activities in Les Houches

Les Houches has a fantastic program of summer and winter activities to suit all ages and abilities. During the winter months, in addition to the first class skiing and snowboarding on offer, you can explore the mountains through one of the snow shoe trips or you might like to attempt some ice climbing. The mountain restaurants are perfect for quiet contemplation of the day whilst enjoying some of the best cuisine on offer and watching truly spectacular sunsets. Films are shown throughout the winter season at the two local cinemas and there is an abundance of indoor activities including swimming, tennis, go karting, bowling and climbing. When the snow melts away it reveals a multitude of moutain bike trails and hiking routes which provide some amazing views of the formidable Mont Blanc mountain. Hang gliding, rafting, hydro-speed, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning, swimming, para gliding, and rock climbing are also widely available throughout the summer months. There is a full program of activities for children who can enjoy tree top adventures such as rope ladders, beams, bridges and Tarzan swings all properly supervised within a safe but fun environment.
