About Saint Gervais
History of Saint Gervais
The ski resort of Saint Gervais sits alongside the magnificent Mont Blanc mountain between Megeve and Chamonix. This traditional 19th century spa town is proud of its architectual heritage boasting classic stone buildings, intricate ironwork and some breathtaking sculptures. The thermal baths remain popular with visitors to Saint Gervais who enjoy the many health and medical spa treatments available today. Saint Gervais opened the Tramway de Mont Blanc, extending to Les Houches, back in 1907 although this ambitious project failed to accomplish its original target of reaching the summit of Mont Blanc. Saint Gervais boasts 65km of local scenic pistes with stunning views, and is also part of the ski Pass Mont Blanc area with access to 354 pistes over 300km of outstanding skiing and snowboarding terrain.
Accommodation in Saint Gervais
There is an abundance of self catered and catered chalet accommodation built in the authentic Savoyard style with both character and charm. Ski chalets are randomly scattered amongst the moutain pastures and their convenient location at the foot of the slopes means that they provide true ski in/ski out accommodation with direct access to the local pistes. Much of the Saint Gervais village is restricted to pedestrian use only making it a very safe place for families with young children. There are three nursery slopes and two kindergartens which will guarantee a fun and exhilarating skiing environment where children can learn and perfect their new found skills. Tree lined runs make for some outstanding beginner and intermediate skiing, whilst experts should head off piste to some challenging untracked areas which will deliver the thrill that advanced skiers seek. Snowboarders are also well catered for with a great snow park complete with half pipe that will test every level of rider.
Activities in Saint Gervais
There are a large number of welcoming restaurants that offer international, French and typical Savoyard cuisine, all served within pleasant and comfortable surroundings that are ideal for relaxing evenings out with friends and family. The bars are generally quiet with a family friendly atmosphere set in cosy surroundings. Whilst some luxury chalet accommocation in Saint Gervias will have hot tubs, why not experience the relaxing thermal baths which are famous for their pure healing properties. Adrenaline junkies will love the thrilling activities on offer at Saint Gervais including paragliding, winter climbing and snow mountain biking. Alternatively there is ice skating, snow shoe hiking, curling and an indoor swimming pool all on offer during the winter months. One of the more popular summer activities is hot air balloon rides where you are guaranteed the most spectacular views over the imposing Mont Blanc mountain and Saint Gervais area. Mountain guides are available should you wish to explore the many picturesque hiking trails, or you can discover this spectacular terrain on horse back. Saint Gervais has an interest in pottery and there is a workshop located within the village where you can witness traditional pottery being made by local artists.
